Today is the 15th day of the eighth lunar month. Hong Kong people eat double-yolk white lotus seed paste, but if you happen to be traveling in South Korea today, you will find that they are celebrating the grandest traditional festival of the year - Chuseok (추석) .

Today, instead of mooncakes, people here are eating a traditional rice cake called "Songpyeon (송편)." These crescent-shaped rice cakes are made from rice flour and filled with sweet sesame, red bean, or chestnut fillings. Traditionally, fresh pine needles are placed in the steamer when steaming Songpyeon, giving it a subtle pine aroma. While families used to make them by hand, modern Koreans often buy them ready-made a few days in advance from traditional markets or rice cake shops (떡집) to save time. If you're in Jeju today, why not try buying a box at a supermarket or a still-open rice cake shop and give it a festive treat!

Besides eating pine nuts, there are a few other things to be careful about while "celebrating" in Jeju today:

• The whole island is almost "still": most private restaurants and Internet celebrity cafes will be closed today. If you are looking for food, be sure to check the business hours on NAVER Map before departure!

• Hiking a taxi is nearly impossible: Jeju has no high-speed rail, and bus services will be reduced today, so you may need to allow a longer wait time if you use Kakao T to book a ride.

• Some attractions remain open: National natural attractions such as Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak are still open, and often offer free admission on Mid-Autumn Festival.
